I think it's interesting to note that some of the same issues that were prevalent years ago, are still the same, it just seems to me that the rules of engagement change. I also wonder if sometimes we focus too much on "culture change" rather than actively being the change in culture we wish to see. You are clearly embodying this in what you do.

Your last point about being involved and speaking up in national settings links with some new initiatives that are taking place at the moment across Wales. Individuals (service users) and people close to them (carers) are being actively recruited (by me and others) to sit on the relatively new "National Partnership Board" that drive the strategy, "Together for Mental Health" here in Wales.

Let us hope that these people, and those they represent, will be allowed to assume their rightful place in helping transform the way treatment is provided and/or enforced, especially within mental health in-patient facilities.

Thank you for reading the blog and sharing your experience. Your points ...Interesting blog post, thanks Freda. Your points about people exercising control and choice through smoking and eating are well made. Especially in psychiatric wards where patients are disempowered and even forced to undergo treatment that is unpleasant, to say the least. Speaking from personal experience, of forced psychiatric treatment in response to my 'non-compliance', or in the normal world non-conformity.

Where I live, in Fife, Scotland, the psychiatric nurses also smoke a lot and had been dropping their cigarette butts outside the gates of the hospital, in piles. It seemed to demonstrate a lack of responsibility and was reflected in their practice inside the wards. For my son was an inpatient 18 months ago and experienced dehumanising treatment by these nurses who used seclusion, restraint and forced treatment to control the patients. I made a series of complaints which are only now going somewhere, at the same time raising awareness of the environmental issues re cig butts, empty alcohol containers around the hospital grounds and other unsightly issues. Resulting in a major tidy up and renovation.

But the culture within the wards will be harder to shift and that work, for me, is ongoing as an activist and campaigner. To have more of an impact I now take part in many national MH groups as a survivor/carer rep and speak out at every opportunity about human rights issues in psychiatric settings.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
